World Health Organization Issues Concern Over Acute Scarcity of Obesity Injections

Fewer than one in 10 individuals who could benefit from obesity jabs such as Wegovy have access to them, states the global health agency as it issues its initial recommendations on the drugs.

Given in excess of 1,000,000,000 people worldwide now living with obesity, it is calling for broader and more equitable access to this class of drugs.

Per projections, over two billion are projected to be living with obesity by 2030 if no action is taken.

"Our latest guidelines recognises that excess weight is a lifelong illness that can be addressed with comprehensive and ongoing care," stated its chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

Substantial prices, limited production capacity, and distribution challenges are major barriers to broad access to the jabs that can assist patients in reducing substantial body mass, explains the organization.

Skinny Jab Supply Crisis

Even in the current best projected scenario, the production of such drugs might only reach approximately 100 million people – under 10% of eligible patients, per the health organization.

The advice encourages nations and manufacturers to expand availability, by measures such as licensing agreements.

A patent on a key compound – the main ingredient of the drug Wegovy – is scheduled to end in a number of nations in 2026.

The Way Obesity Drugs Function

These medications mimick a natural hormone to reduce digestion speed, reduce hunger and boost feelings of fullness so people reduce food intake.

Individuals usually begin shedding pounds within a few weeks of commencing the once-weekly jabs.

Research indicates users may regain a significant portion after a year of stopping the treatment, as their normal appetite come back.

Being overweight or obese increases your risk for experiencing diseases, including diabetes, cardiovascular issues, brain attack, and some malignancies.

Obesity affects people in all nations and was responsible for millions of deaths worldwide in 2024, per the WHO.
